Description: The early Audi/VW Balance Shaft Modules are well known to fail between 130,000 to 200,000km. It is very important to ensure your balance shaft module doesn’t fail, because integrated into this unit is the oil pump. If you lose oil pressure, you can seriously damage your engine in a short amount of time. There are two different ways in which they fail: 1) The early version of these modules was chain-driven via sprocket on the crankshaft. This sprocket is known to lose its teeth, or, if left long enough, to break apart. This revised version of the balance module eliminates the chain drive and replaces it with solid gears for much increased reliability and longevity. These gears are included with the unit (as pictured) 2) The oil pump is driven by a hexagonal shaft. In the early versions, these shafts have a shallow seat, and the edges can become rounded. This causes the shaft to slip, and the oil pump loses its drive. This in turn lowers the oil pressure, or will cause the pump to stop moving oil at all. The later version has a deeper seat and improved shaft material to prevent rounding.
